Archbishop Alexander K. Sample was appointed the eleventh Archbishop of Portland, Oregon, in 2013. He studied canon law at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (the Angelicum) in Rome, where he received his J.C.L. He has also earned a Master of Divinity from the Pontifical College Josephinum Seminary, completed studies in philosophy at the College of St. Thomas, and earned a Master and a Bachelor of Science degree in metallurgical engineering from Michigan Technological University. He was ordained a priest at St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette, MI, in 1990, and was later appointed Bishop of Marquette in 2005.
